(Note: Read "Vernal Equinox" blurb before you read this)
Ever since I was given my first terrarium, my mom and I have gone crazy over them. Last weekend we went to a thrift store to buy vases and fish bowls. Then we went home and washed and planned the terrariums. Then we went to work on creating our inside gardens.
Now, each terrarium is like it’s own world, each one has a different ecosystem, theme, and style. Common styles are, forest, ocean, or desert. Before I show pictures of my terrariums I am going to teach you how to do your own.
1) First before you do anything you will need supplies. Here is a list:
:A vase, fish bowl, lightbulb, eggshell, etc. Anything that can be used as a terrarium really.
: A base if the vase is unstable.
:A base layer, Glass, marbles, activated charcoal, or lava rock all work for a base layer and a drainage system (but don’t put pretty glass where you can’t see it.
:Soil, cactus soil is preferred, it can be used in any ecosystem.
:Plants, anything from cat grass to bonsai trees works. But it really depends on the light and moisture needs.
:Figurines, I prefer glass but it depends on preference.
:Spray bottle for watering
2) Put the base layer in first. Put a sizable amount but not to much or you will have no room for anything else.
3) Add the soil. Make sure you know how deep your plants roots go so they have enough room to grow.
4) Plant the plants. This part is tricky because you can easily get carried away and add too many plants. Unfortunately this will cause the plants to die and the terrarium to get a claustrophobic look. For the cleanest looking terrariums use moss or grass.
5) Add the figurine. This gives the terrarium a final touch and really defines the style.
6) Now step back and look at the terrarium from all angles. Adjust if needed and enjoy!
